Part 1: Background

A moral crisis in the Darfur region of Sudan is raging. An ethnic genocide has resulted in the deaths of more than 50,000 people. More than a 1.5 million have been displaced. To get a firsthand view of the crisis, American Progress sent Senior Fellow Gayle Smith, formerly the senior director for African Affairs at the National Security Council, to Darfur. She reported her findings in this five-part series.
