Sam Hughes is a policy analyst for the Health Policy team at American Progress. Hughes is a Washington, D.C., transplant originally from Kansas. While completing a Bachelor of Science in political science at Kansas State University, Hughes worked in a local pharmacy, which sparked his interest in health policy. Following college, he attended law school at the George Washington University, where he focused on health and insurance law. During law school, Hughes was a law clerk for the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee’s health policy team under Sen. Patty Murray (D-WA) and as a law clerk for the U.S. Department of Labor’s Employee Benefits Security Administration. He also worked as a graduate research assistant at the Redstone Global Center for Prevention and Wellness, where he conducted research into state employee health plans. Since graduating from law school, he has been admitted to the Virginia Bar Association and practiced employment and employee benefits law prior to joining American Progress.
