STATEMENT: Trump Administration Defends Discrimination as a Form of Free Speech, says CAP’s Laura E. Durso

Washington, D.C. — Today, the Trump administration filed a Supreme Court brief siding with a Colorado baker who refused to prepare a wedding cake for a same-sex couple because the baker said it would violate his religious beliefs.

In response, Laura E. Durso, vice president of the LGBT Research and Communications Project at the Center for American Progress, released the following statement:

It’s appalling that the Trump administration would say discrimination is a form of free speech. That argument opens the door for every business in the country to refuse service to people based on race, sexual orientation, or religious affiliation. Once more, this administration shows contempt for the principle of equal treatment under the law.
