Washington, D.C. — Laura E. Durso, Senior Director of the Center for American Progress LGBT Research and Communications Project, issued the following statement after the Michigan Board of Education voted to implement guidance to Michigan schools on creating an inclusive environment for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender, or LGBT, people. The guidance includes allowing transgender students to use the bathrooms and locker rooms that are consistent with their gender identity.
The Michigan Board of Education has voted on the side of equality and fairness, and these guidelines mean that lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender students—indeed, all students and their families—can focus more on learning and less on fears for their safety and well-being. School districts across the country have already welcomed transgender students into their classrooms and other facilities without issue, and these policies can be a guide for other states looking to create more supportive school climates.
