STATEMENT: CAP’s LaShawn Warren Slams Trump Administration Policy to Allow Discrimination in Health Care
Washington, D.C. — Today, the Trump administration announced a new division in the Department of Health and Human Services Office for Civil Rights that would allow health providers to refuse care based on religious or moral objections. In response, LaShawn Warren, vice president of the Faith and Progressive Policy Initiative at the Center for American Progress, issued the following statement:
It is sacrilegious and shameful to use faith as a reason to deny people critical health care. Worse, it is deeply troubling that this administration would stand with those who discriminate against women, religious minorities, and LGBTQ people, particularly when the Office for Civil Rights was established to protect people from discrimination. We must respect religious choice but should not stand for religion being weaponized to promote an extreme political agenda.
