Washington, D.C. — The First Amendment guarantee of freedom of religion is one of our most cherished constitutional rights. Yet the Trump administration has used the concept of religious liberty as a weapon to advance a right-wing social agenda that harms women, the LGBT community, and other vulnerable groups.
Please join the Center for American Progress on October 31 at 12:00 p.m. ET for a discussion of the impact of the administration’s decisions to deviate from legal precedent and established religious liberty principles.
Within weeks of taking office, President Donald Trump issued the infamous executive order banning Muslims from entering the United States. Since then, his administration has continued to test the boundaries of religious liberty, most recently with the issuance of worrisome guidance from the U.S. Justice Department to all government agencies that potentially sanctions the use of discriminatory religious exemptions.
Panelists will discuss the Trump administration’s efforts to allow people and corporations to opt out of the law by citing religious objections, which harms the LGBT community, religious minorities, women, and others. Panelists also will explore ways in which advocates and faith communities are fighting to uphold true religious liberty, which respects pluralism and rejects discrimination.
