The National Advisory Committee on Institutional Quality and Integrity (NACIQI) is an advisory body that makes recommendations to the U.S. secretary of education on matters related to accreditation and to the eligibility and certification process for institutions of higher education. The committee recommends which accreditation agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. Without this seal of approval from a recognized higher education accrediting body, colleges and universities cannot receive federal funds.
On December 8, 2023, the Center for American Progress submitted a comment letter in response to a request from NACIQI for written comment on accrediting agencies undergoing review for continued recognition by the U.S. secretary of education, aiming to increase transparency and accountability in the accreditation space. The letter focuses on specific issues that the agencies appearing at the winter meeting should have addressed to be considered in compliance—for example, complaint processes. The letter also provides comments related to accreditor oversight of online program managers.
