STATEMENT: Trump’s Directive Barring Transgender Americans from Joining the Military Is a Cruel Attack on People Who Have Chosen to Serve Their Country, says CAP’s Laura E. Durso

Washington, D.C. — Today, President Donald Trump issued formal guidance directing the military to bar transgender people from joining the military. The guidance comes after Trump announced the ban in three tweets on July 26.

In response, Laura E. Durso, vice president of the LGBT Research and Communications Project at the Center for American Progress, released the following statement:
This action is a cruel attack on people who have chosen to serve their country. It hurts service members and their families, weakens our nation’s military apparatus, and plays to our worst fears rather than our strongest values.
