STATEMENT: Withdrawal from Paris Climate Agreement Is an Attack on Prosperity of All Americans, Says CAP’s Neera Tanden

Washington, D.C.— Neera Tanden, president and CEO of the Center for American Progress, released the following statement today.

Withdrawing from the Paris Agreement is reckless with our economy, national security, and public health. Climate change is already imposing staggering costs, threatening our military assets, and increasing the risks of political instability worldwide. This decision shows nothing short of contempt for the countless communities in the United States—and around the globe—that are harmed by climate change.

Meanwhile, the rest of the world is pressing ahead with the climate effort—with China taking the lead in the growing clean energy market. Backtracking on our participation in the global climate effort undermines our competitiveness—and further erodes our relationships with key allies on security and trade.

Prioritizing polluters puts the American people last. President Donald Trump’s actions today are an attack on the health and prosperity of the American people and an attack on our planet.
