STATEMENT: Trump’s Budget Outline Sends Money to Corporate Cronies at Expense of Working Americans, Says CAP’s Carmel Martin

Washington, D.C. — Carmel Martin, Executive Vice President for Policy at the Center for American Progress, released the following statement today.

President Donald Trump’s first budget outline follows a consistent pattern of his administration by sending more money to corporate cronies at the expense of the working class. American families are already struggling to make ends meet, and this budget will make things worse by pulling away the ladders in the middle class provided by education, infrastructure, job training, and affordable housing. Big polluters will get even richer by cutting corners and poisoning our air and water.

By providing unnecessary funds to the defense budget, which is already higher in real terms than it was in the Cold War, and slashing funding for diplomatic and foreign aid programs, President Trump’s proposed budget will also make Americans less safe. Lawmakers have a choice: side with President Trump and his corporate cronies or stand up for the American people.
