Washington, D.C. — Despite facing serious allegations of insider trading of health care company stocks and holding extreme views regarding the Affordable Care Act, Medicare, Medicaid, and women’s reproductive rights, the U.S. Senate confirmed Rep. Tom Price (R-GA) as the next secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The vote was entirely on party lines, showing that Price is a deeply flawed choice to run the department. CAP President and CEO Neera Tanden issued the following statement:
In normal times, Tom Price would never have been confirmed as a cabinet secretary ,but these are not normal times. The allegations of insider trading raise serious ethical and legal concerns for his leadership. His ideas are far outside the mainstream and evince no concern for hardworking low-income and middle-class Americans. It is no wonder the Senate majority had to resort to great lengths to confirm him, breaking their own rules in unprecedented fashion. Tom Price does not have the support or trust of the American people, and his policies will be judged harshly and met with fierce opposition.
