Washington, D.C. — Center for American Progress President and CEO Neera Tanden issued the following statement on the outcomes of Election Day:
America woke up this morning to election results that were surprising to many. This election was a long, divisive road and challenged the country in ways we have not previously witnessed. But it was also a very close election, and the progressive policies that drove millions of people to the polls cannot be pushed off the table.
This is not a time to dismantle and discard the important progress we have made as a nation over the past eight years. It is time to turn attention to mending what divides us and finding a path forward to common ideals. That includes speaking more directly about the consequences of economic inequality and the need to drive toward a process of political renewal.
Americans still deserve a more prosperous future for their families; we still deserve cleaner, healthier, safer communities; and we still deserve a government that can uphold the values of all the people it represents.
Progressives must continue to fight for positive change that they know will make this country better while recognizing people’s real concerns. Our work will have an increased degree of difficulty, but it comes with an even higher degree of importance.
The American people deserve no less than a country that is more equal, just, and secure.
