STATEMENT: Neera Tanden on Latest Failure of ACA Repeal Effort

Washington, D.C. — Neera Tanden, president and CEO of the Center for American Progress, issued the below statement following news that the Senate will not hold a vote on the latest effort to rip health care coverage from millions of Americans by repealing the Affordable Care Act (ACA):

For the second time in fewer than three months, the American people showed their power by leveraging the strength of individual voices and stories to kill this horrific Republican repeal bill. Today’s defeat belongs entirely to these patients, families, and advocates who fought against a bill that would rip coverage from more than 30 million people and gut Medicaid and eliminate protections for people with pre-existing conditions.

As an institution, Congress must do better because the American people demand it. It’s time to move forward with bipartisan improvements to the Affordable Care Act—which continues to improve the lives of millions across the country—and put an end to partisan games that are bringing our democracy to a halt.
