STATEMENT: CBO Score Proves that GOP Health Care Bill Will Be Devastating to Americans
Washington, D.C. — Center for American Progress Vice President for Health Policy Topher Spiro issued the following statement after the Congressional Budget Office’s, or CBO’s, score showed that 14 million people would lose health care coverage next year under the GOP’s health care bill and another 10 million would lose it by 2026:
This nonpartisan, independent assessment is devastating. President Donald Trump promised not to touch Medicaid, and he promised “insurance for everybody,” but now we know that he will be 24 million people short. It should be clear to everybody that these were false promises. President Trump is betraying the very Americans who sent him to the White House—Trumpcare would hit them the hardest.
More importantly, the quality of life of tens of millions of people is at stake, while the rich await a gigantic tax cut. The CBO report is not just about abstract numbers. Behind those numbers are real people who will suffer—many of whom are living in fear right now. President Trump must abandon this partisan rush to blow up the system, the mere threat of which will cause significant instability in the markets.
