STATEMENT: CAP’s Topher Spiro says CBO Score Shows Trumpcare Will Shut More Sick People Out of the Market

Washington, D.C. — Topher Spiro, vice president for health policy at the Center for American Progress, released the following statement today after the release of the Congressional Budget Office’s (CBO) updated score of the American Health Care Act (AHCA) that passed the House of Representatives this month:

The CBO score clearly shows that Trumpcare has gone from bad to worse. While the overall coverage loss has barely changed, Trumpcare now shuts more sick people out of the market—failing to protect the most vulnerable among us. What has not changed are the devastating cuts to Medicaid that would leave many millions uninsured and cost increases of thousands of dollars for older Americans. The purpose of inflicting this untold pain and suffering is to pay for massive tax cuts for the rich—a political and moral disaster.

Reportedly the Senate is only making tweaks to the House bill—and may even make it worse. The Senate is also following the House by working on the bill in secret—a process that is a total sham. The Senate should start from scratch and work on a bipartisan bill to improve the Affordable Care Act through an open and transparent process.
