STATEMENT: CAP’s Neera Tanden: Senate Budget Resolution Busts the Deficit to Give Tax Cuts to the Wealthy, Slash Investments for the Working and Middle Class

Washington, D.C. — Center for American Progress President and CEO Neera Tanden issued the following statement today after the Senate Budget Committee released its draft Fiscal Year 2018 budget resolution.

This budget proposal blatantly says that deficits don’t matter when it comes to tax cuts for the wealthy and corporations. All this time, the congressional majority’s fear-mongering about a looming debt crisis was just a craven ploy to slash Medicaid, education, environmental protection, and job-creating investments—just so they could cut more secret deals to give big oil companies, multinational corporations, and the rich massive loopholes and giveaways. This is not a job-creation strategy for the working class—that is, unless Senate Republican leadership thinks that the working class includes corporate lobbyists.
