Washington, D.C. — Today, Congress passed a funding bill to reopen the government after a brief shutdown, lifting the spending cap for domestic spending but offering no solution for Dreamers. Neera Tanden, president and CEO of the Center for American Progress, released the following statement in response:
Today’s bipartisan government funding agreement—which expands support for working parents who rely on affordable child care and provides critical relief for millions of families, seniors, and victims of natural disasters—shows that our leaders can still work together to deliver important results for our country.
But once again, President Donald Trump and his allies have left America’s Dreamers out in the cold. We share in the outrage and disappointment of all these young people who have shown the courage and strength to strive for a brighter future and who contribute to their communities on a daily basis. Each of them was promised a deal that would allow them to continue to pursue their dreams in the country they love. Today’s agreement fails to deliver on that promise.
CAP is more resolved than ever before to fight alongside Dreamers. The overwhelming majority of the American public believes that Dreamers should have a path to citizenship. Now, we expect House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI)—and all members of Congress—to deliver on their pledge to forge a bipartisan solution on behalf of all Dreamers. After today’s devastating blow, it is time for America’s leaders to honor their words.
