Washington, D.C. — Neera Tanden, President and CEO of the Center for American Progress, released the following statement today after the U.S. Senate approved the nomination of Steven Mnuchin to serve as U.S. secretary of the treasury:
Senate Republicans broke the rules in order to jam through yet another one of Donald Trump’s unqualified nominees, confirming Steven Mnuchin as treasury secretary. It is a fitting confirmation for a man whose mortgage company, OneWest, routinely broke the rules—through robo-signing and falsifying documents—to jam through foreclosures all across the United States. Vulnerable borrowers were kicked out of their homes while OneWest collected billions in profits, much of which was reaped on the backs of taxpayers. Such behavior never has, and never will, make America great.
Homeowners and entire communities suffered nearly irreparable harm when the financial crisis hit, but not Steve Mnuchin. Only in the highly dysfunctional administration of Donald Trump could such behavior be rewarded with a cabinet position to oversee the health of the U.S. economy and safeguard the financial system.
