STATEMENT: CAP’s Neera Tanden on President Donald Trump’s Joint Address to Congress

Washington, D.C. — Neera Tanden, President and CEO of the Center for American Progress, released the following statement tonight following President Donald Trump’s first joint address to Congress:

In the first 40 days of his administration, President Trump’s campaign promises have met the cold reality of governing—and the result has been total chaos. In his first five weeks, President Trump has simply made things worse: He’s raised costs on middle-class families while cutting a break for banks and polluting energy corporations; threatened Americans’ access to affordable health care; undermined our immigrant communities and national security with cruel and senseless executive orders; and launched an assault against crucial environmental protections.

After just five weeks with Trump in office, Wall Street and big business are sitting pretty, but the deck is even more stacked against everyday Americans. Tonight’s joint address to Congress shows that Trump and Republican leadership in Congress are completely lacking a clear agenda and policy priorities that will bring solutions and continued progress to the American people.
