Washington, D.C. — Chelsea Parsons, Vice President of Guns and Crime Policy at the Center for American Progress, issued the following statement regarding New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman’s announcement of the release of a new report and interactive tool that provide a detailed analysis of guns recovered in connection with crime throughout New York state and offer a unique look at the movement of illegal guns into communities across the state.
This report provides an unprecedented look at the flow of illegal guns into New York and offers a stark illustration of the challenge faced by states such as New York whose strong gun laws are undermined by a lax approach to this issue taken by other states. This is the most comprehensive analysis of statewide crime gun trace data to date and provides invaluable information to law enforcement, policymakers, and community stakeholders seeking to prevent gun violence across the state. Attorney General Schneiderman has shown tremendous leadership on the gun safety issue, and we are hopeful that other states will follow the example of this report and conduct a similar analysis to continue shining a light on the illegal trafficking networks currently operating in this country.
In December 2015, CAP released a report urging state and local leaders to take nonlegislative action to address gun violence and offering 28 recommendations for action, including the kind of trace data analysis report released by Attorney General Schneiderman today.
