STATEMENT: CAP’s Carmel Martin on Confirmation of Mick Mulvaney to Serve as OMB Director

Washington, D.C. — Carmel Martin, Executive Vice President for Policy at the Center for American Progress, released the following statement after the Senate confirmed Rep. Mick Mulvaney (R-SC) to serve as the next director of the Office of Management and Budget, or OMB.

Mick Mulvaney’s confirmation spells bad news for the American middle class and the economy. Candidate Trump promised to protect Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid, but President Trump put forward a budget director who called Social Security—the bedrock of economic security for American workers and their families—a Ponzi scheme. Mulvaney has also advocated to end Medicare as we know it; backed massive Medicaid cuts that would result in millions of seniors, people with disabilities, and children losing their health coverage; and was more than willing to throw the nation into default. The massive disconnect between Trump’s campaign promises and his dangerous, anti-middle class governing agenda is becoming clearer by the day.
