Washington, D.C. — Center for American Progress President and CEO Neera Tanden issued the following statement on the passing of Cassandra Q. Butts:
We are incredibly saddened to hear the news that our former colleague Cassandra Butts passed away this week. Cassandra was a lawyer, a leader, an advocate, and—most importantly—a friend to many in the progressive community.
Cassandra was one of the first members of CAP’s leadership team. During her time as CAP’s Senior Vice President for Domestic Policy, Cassandra was an influential voice on driving policies that benefit all Americans and helped change the national conversation on issues such as immigration reform, access to health care, and workers’ rights. We are indebted to her contributions. Her leadership in the Office of the White House Counsel, on the campaign trail, in Congress, and at the Millennium Challenge Corporation was the embodiment of what it means to be a public servant.
The entire CAP family sends our condolences to Cassandra’s family, friends, and colleagues, all of whom respected her work, appreciated her advice, and valued her friendship. We will miss her very much.
