STATEMENT: CAP President Neera Tanden on Attack in Nice, France

Washington, D.C. — Center for American Progress President and CEO Neera Tanden issued the following statement on Thursday’s attack in Nice, France:

The brutal and cowardly attack on people celebrating Bastille Day in Nice, France, leaves us once again in shock. And our thoughts are with the French people, our oldest allies, at this difficult time. This attack continues a stretch of terrorist violence not just in France but also in Belgium, Turkey, Israel, Bangladesh, Iraq, and Tunisia, as well as here in the United States and in many other parts of the world.

Going forward, we must remain vigilant against the threat of terrorism. But we must also remember that anti-Muslim sentiment only furthers the violent objectives of terrorist groups. It is critical for people of every nation and every faith to stand together in the face of such violence and to uphold the universal values that these victims had come to celebrate last night: liberté, égalité, fraternité.
