Washington, D.C. — With the announcement of the passing of Supreme Court Associate Justice Antonin Scalia, Center for American Progress President and CEO Neera Tanden released the following statement:
Our condolences go out to the family of U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justice Antonin Scalia after his passing in Texas. While we disagree with his jurisprudence, we all know his nearly 30 years of service on the Court, and to our nation, have been extremely influential and impactful.
The current Supreme Court term could be one of the most important in the last 50 years, with cases affecting women’s health, immigration, workers’ rights, and other important issues. This only underscores the fact that the American people deserve an orderly and swift confirmation process. Seventeen Supreme Court justices have been confirmed during presidential election years, and the president and the Senate must move forward without delay to ensure a full Court makes this term’s critical decisions.
