STATEMENT: CAP Condemns Trump Administration Actions To Limit Abortion in Jane Doe Cases

Washington, D.C. — Jamila Taylor, senior fellow at the Women’s Initiative at the Center for American Progress, issued the following statement in response to the Trump administration’s request that the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals and the U.S. Supreme Court block two young immigrant women, currently in the custody of the Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR), from obtaining a safe, legal abortion.

Women deserve the right to access safe, legal abortion without interference from a Trump administration hellbent on inserting itself into the personal health care decisions of women—regardless of age or immigration status.

The district court’s restraining order made clear that ORR Director Scott Lloyd and the Trump administration are not only trying to flout the law, but taking their invasive anti-abortion agenda to every level of government in attempt to take women back decades into the past to a dangerous time when abortion was illegal, inaccessible, and less safe.

The decision by HHS’s ORR to yet again intervene in the decision of young women to obtain safe, legal abortions is an example of outrageous government overreach and should be condemned by all individuals regardless of political affiliation or ideology.
