STATEMENT: Ahead of Senate Confirmation Hearing, CAP’s Carmel Martin Urges a Swift Vote for Education Secretary Nominee John B. King, Jr.

Washington, D.C. — Ahead of Education Secretary nominee John B. King, Jr.’s Senate confirmation hearing, Carmel Martin, Executive Vice President for Policy at the Center for American Progress, released the following statement:

As a former teacher, principal, and state superintendent, John King is extremely qualified to be the next leader of the U.S. Department of Education. He has demonstrated his leadership as acting deputy and secretary. More importantly, Acting Secretary King has shown untiring dedication to improving opportunity for children throughout his career. The Senate owes him a swift confirmation. Congress united over education when they passed the Every Student Succeeds Act in December of last year, and the confirmation of our next Secretary of Education should be no different. I applaud Sen. Lamar Alexander for scheduling a quick confirmation hearing and urge him to move the nomination to a confirmation vote just as quickly.
