Washington, D.C. — Today, the Center for American Progress announced Devadatta “Debu” Gandhi as senior director of Immigration Policy. In this role, he will lead the organization’s efforts to win a pathway to citizenship for undocumented immigrants and increase opportunities for legal migration, illustrating the inextricable links for such action with growing a robust, sustainable, and inclusive economy.
In this context, Gandhi will also work to defend, protect, and expand protections for vulnerable temporarily protected immigrants, such as Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipients and Temporary Protected Status (TPS) holders; rebuild and reform the refugee and asylum systems; improve the administration of immigration policies and practices by the federal government; and build a more fair, humane, and workable immigration system.
“Our immigration system is badly broken. For decades, our country has not been able to fully prosper or live up to its ideals because more than 10 million people have been forced to live in the shadows,” said Patrick Gaspard, president and CEO of the Center for American Progress. “It is imperative that we create a workable and humane immigration system, not just because it is the right thing to do but because study after study shows that immigrants are a driver of economic growth in this country. Debu brings a deep expertise in immigration policy and is committed to creating an immigration system that not only aligns with our nation’s highest values but will help the country thrive.”
