Washington, D.C. — This week, Afghan President Ashraf Ghani and Chief Executive Officer Abdullah Abdullah began their first official visit to the United States since the formation of a national unity government, or NUG. The next two years will be particularly important in Afghanistan’s future as the NUG seeks to address pressing economic, security, and corruption concerns that have plagued Afghanistan throughout the post-Taliban period.
Last week, the Center for American Progress released a series of issue briefs addressing these concerns. Today, CAP released an interactive that provides a comprehensive overview of the security, political, and economic commitments made by the international community to Afghanistan, coupled with the upcoming conferences in the next two years that will be critical in the decision making about international support for Afghanistan’s future.
“The national unity government of President Ashraf Ghani and Chief Executive Officer Abdullah Abdullah in Afghanistan faces serious challenges in order to reform a system riddled with corruption, build a sustainable economy, and manage security in the face of Taliban threats,” said Vikram Singh, CAP Vice President for National Security and International Policy. “Along with four new CAP issue briefs issued ahead of the Afghan leaders’ visit to Washington, this interactive helps make sense of international commitments to Afghanistan and chart a path toward a more stable future.”
