Target Nuclear Weapons Budget

The super committee should recommend cuts in a host of holdover nuclear weapons programs, writes Lawrence J. Korb.

Americans’ frustrations with our economy have come to a boiling point in recent months. They are only exceeded by their frustration with Congress’ seeming inability to make the kinds of thoughtful decisions that will be necessary to address the growing national debt and the problematic federal deficit.

As the so-called supercommittee prepares recommendations for getting our economic house in order, it is already at risk of failing due to efforts to leave military spending untouched. This is deeply misguided. Anyone with significant national security experience knows perfectly well that there are billions of dollars that could be saved from our military budget. As the former director of the Office of Management and Budget, Ohio Sen. Rob Portman probably knows this better than any other member of the committee.
