This video is a collaboration between the Center for American Progress and the Legal Defense Fund.
This is the fourth video in the “State Voting Rights Acts: Explained” video series created by the Center for American Progress and the Legal Defense Fund (LDF). In this video, Amia Trigg, senior counsel and director of professional development at LDF; Aseem Mulji, senior legal counsel for redistricting at the Campaign Legal Center; and Michael Pernick, political participation counsel at LDF, discuss the history and impact of preclearance. If included in state voting rights acts, preclearance programs could stop discrimination before it occurs. These programs create a streamlined administrative process where legal experts review key voting changes and ensure they will not harm people based on race before they go into effect.
