Each year, Safer Internet Day provides a great occasion to raise awareness of emerging online issues and to work together to reduce online harm. In the United States, despite divided government, there is broad bipartisan consensus on the need to protect Americans’ privacy and children’s safety online.
What are these digital threats and their impacts on society, democracy, and physical and mental health? Is there an American way to guarantee both safety and free speech on the internet? What does it mean that soon Europeans will have far more protections online from major American Big Tech companies than American families do?
