Washington, D.C. — Despite historic progress in recent years on lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender—or LGBT—rights, in a majority of states, LGBT people and their families remain at risk of being fired from their jobs simply because of who they are. John Murphy—the executive director of a Richmond, Virginia-based assisted living facility with ties to the Catholic Diocese of Richmond—was fired after barely a week on the job simply because he was in a committed, same-sex marriage.
The story of Murphy and his husband, Jerry Carter, has been documented in a new video released by the Center for American Progress. Both Murphy and Carter are available to comment on the financial and emotional impact that comes from being discriminated against and the need for continued focus on LGBT equality.
