Dan Herman is senior director for democratic accountability at American Progress.

From 2021 to 2022, he was senior adviser for accountability to the commissioner of U.S. Customs and Border Protection, where he designed and led initiatives focused on accountability, integrity, and transparency for the nation’s largest law enforcement agency. From 2018 to 2021, he was director of advocacy and campaigns for National Security Action, where he oversaw all political activity and partnerships.

He previously worked on policy, management, and oversight of counterterrorism, special operations, and sensitive intelligence and security programs at the Defense Department. He was national security director for presidential personnel in the Obama White House, overseeing the political appointments process at all national security departments and agencies. He has overseen a range of state and national issue advocacy and electoral campaigns.
