Washington, D.C. — President Joe Biden has laid out the biggest proposal for economic growth in decades—one that would benefit all Americans. It would finally make life much more affordable for working- and middle-class families through ensuring tax fairness, lowering costs, and raising wages. It is also the country’s best shot at stopping the increasingly devastating impacts of climate change through investments to accelerate the transition to a 100 percent clean economy—saving consumers money in the process. After decades of stagnant wages and low numbers of good jobs, the Biden agenda would help create millions of well-paying union jobs in infrastructure and new industries such as clean energy, and it would help fill the shortage of home care workers for our elderly and disabled loved ones.
As the United States emerges from a pandemic that has depressed entire industries, some areas—such as used cars and travel—are predictably seeing temporary increases, especially during the summer travel season. But the real challenges facing American families are the costs that have been increasing for decades on necessities ranging from prescription drugs and health care to child care and home care; wages that have remained flat; and a tax code that has been unfairly rigged for the superrich and big corporations.
