Washington, D.C. – Earlier today while standing on the Edmund Pettus bridge, Vice President Kamala Harris called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. Following her comments, Patrick Gaspard, president and CEO of the Center for American Progress, issued the following statement:
Words matter. And Vice President Harris’s call for an immediate ceasefire today was a powerful call for humanity and reason after five months of violence.
Ultimately, only a ceasefire and release of all the Israeli hostages can effectively end the suffering in Gaza. The difficult road ahead toward lasting peace can only begin when the fighting has ended. We welcome the administration using all available tools and leverage to achieve peace and preserve Israeli and Palestinian lives.
