Washington, D.C. — After Iran fired more than a dozen missiles at two Iraqi bases housing U.S. and coalition forces, Neera Tanden, president and CEO of the Center for American Progress, issued the following statement:
It is fortunate that no Americans or Iraqis lost their lives last night when Iran retaliated for the killing of Gen. Qassem Soleimani. But make no mistake: President Trump has put the nation on a dangerous course with Iran through his own decision-making. America’s strategic position in the Middle East is declining. Russian influence is growing. Iranian influence is growing. And Iran’s nuclear program is now unconstrained.
None of the president’s actions have unified the international community. They have divided it. None of the president’s actions have reduced Iran’s influence or prevented Iran from continuing to destabilize the region. They have not delivered strategic gains for U.S. interests. These are the results of a failed policy.
