Washington, D.C. — Today, news reports revealed that U.S. Supreme Court nominee Amy Coney Barrett signed on to a 2006 ad calling for an end to the “barbaric” legacy of Roe v. Wade. At the time of the ad, Barrett was as a law professor at the University of Notre Dame. She failed to disclose this anti-abortion advocacy in questionnaires provided to the Senate Judiciary Committee. In response, Shilpa Phadke, vice president of the Women’s Initiative at the Center for American Progress, issued the following statement:
The stunning revelation of Amy Coney Barrett’s anti-abortion advocacy confirms what we all knew—that President Trump and Senate conservatives want to overturn Roe v. Wade and end the rights of women to control their reproductive lives. It’s even more shocking that the administration tried to hide this bombshell from Senate investigators and the American public. The ad that Barrett endorsed comes from a group that wants to criminalize doctors who perform abortions and even criminalize health professionals who help women with the in vitro fertilization process.
This is one of many statements that Barrett has made criticizing the right to abortion. She cannot be objective when it comes to one of the most important constitutional questions that will face the Supreme Court. Polls show that most Americans want to keep the protections of Roe v. Wade in place. A vote for Barrett is a vote to repeal Roe.
