Washington, D.C. – Today, President Donald Trump released a new list of potential U.S. Supreme Court nominees. The list is made up of individuals who have demonstrated their long-standing opposition to our country’s core civil rights on the bench and as lawyers—as well as while serving in Congress. In response, Maggie Jo Buchanan, director of Legal Progress at the Center for American Progress, issued the following statement:
Including three ultraconservative senators on the president’s Supreme Court short list shows just how much Trump prioritizes far-right politics over the rule of law. Released just a day after his Department of Justice moved to protect the president from horrific rape allegations, this list makes clear Trump’s goal of undermining the integrity of our justice system—which threatens the safety and security of every individual across our country.
