Washington, D.C. — Ahead of the Trump administration’s planned announcement revoking California’s ability to set its own standards for vehicle pollution, Center for American Progress Senior Vice President for Energy and Environment Policy Christy Goldfuss released the following statement:
As youth across America plan to strike for climate action, today’s move by President Donald Trump and Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Andrew Wheeler, a former coal lobbyist, puts all Americans’ health in jeopardy while gutting one of the most effective carbon pollution reduction approaches to date.
Right now, California is leading the push for cleaner air and increased certainty for automakers. Today’s attack by an administration peddling discredited legal theories in bad faith serves little purpose other than to throw the auto industry into disarray for years to come in support of the oil and gas industry. Consumers will suffer the consequences of this administration’s focus on blocking climate action to benefit fossil fuel CEOs and their lobbyist allies.
While we still expect the administration to attempt to undo the commonsense clean cars standards, today’s attack on California’s authority to protect the health and wellness of its own residents by controlling pollution within its own borders is an attack on every state’s right to set more ambitious protections.
