Washington, D.C. — After the U.S. Senate voted in favor of a bipartisan resolution to block President Donald Trump’s declaration of a national emergency along the U.S.-Mexico border, Sam Berger, vice president of Democracy and Government Reform at the Center for American Progress, issued the following statement:
Today’s vote is yet another emphatic rejection of President Trump’s unconstitutional land grab. It sends a clear message that no president can abuse the Constitution and reject the clear will of Congress when it comes to spending taxpayer funds. President Trump is trying to force our military to pay for his campaign backdrop and, in the process, is trampling on our Constitution. If conservatives truly believe in upholding the law, more of them will stand up to the president and override his expected veto of this measure.
