STATEMENT: Senate GOP Kowtowing to a Guilty President, Says CAP’s Neera Tanden Following Vote Against Calling Witnesses

Washington, D.C. — Neera Tanden, president and CEO of the Center for American Progress, issued the following statement today after Senate Republicans defeated a motion to allow additional witnesses and documents to be subpoenaed in the impeachment trial of President Donald Trump:

There can be only one reason for Senate Republicans blocking additional documents from release and witnesses from testifying: They know that such evidence would demonstrate Trump’s guilt. They have chosen to kowtow to a guilty president rather than uphold their oath to our country and to our democracy.

The impeachment inquiry established the criminality of the president. American people deserve the truth, and a trial with no witnesses is not a trial at all; it’s a cover-up, one that Senate Republicans have actively aided and abetted.
