Washington, D.C. — Today, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a bipartisan appropriations bill that will prevent a government shutdown. In response, Patrick Gaspard, president and CEO of the Center for American Progress, released the following statement:
Funding the government is one of the most essential, but basic, functions of Congress. The fact that it took the MAGA-led House nearly six months, a handful of near shutdowns, and a new House Speaker to get it done is an indictment of their ability to govern. In the face of this incredible obstructionism, Leaders Schumer and Jeffries kept the government open, which was never a given, but it is unconscionable that it came at the cost of preventing famine in Gaza. I am extremely troubled by the prohibition on UNRWA funding, which further isolates the U.S. response to this growing humanitarian emergency. This prohibition will crush the flow of food and other aid reaching Gazans at the moment it is most needed, even while the United States continues to supply weapons for the assault.
