Washington, D.C. — In response to ongoing revelations about President Donald Trump’s pressure on Ukraine to attack President Trump’s political opponent, Neera Tanden, president and CEO of the Center for American Progress, issued the following statement:
It is now clear that Donald Trump is engaged in an effort to deprive America of a free and fair election in 2020, and he will not stop unless somebody stops him. Trump’s defining characteristic of putting his own interests ahead of the country’s has brought us to a breaking point.
Trump appears to have used foreign assistance funding—that Congress appropriated—to extort a foreign government to attack his political opponent. This is obviously incredible corruption beyond what we have seen from any White House in memory. Even the act of asking Ukrainians to investigate Trump’s opponent, which Trump freely admits to, is an impeachable offense. This was no isolated call but rather a pressure campaign pursued obsessively over five months or more, with the enlistment of multiple Cabinet officials. Trump has left the speaker of the House and House Democrats no choice but to start full-scale impeachment for the sake of our democracy and all that America stands for.
