Washington, D.C. — Today, the U.S. Senate passed its version of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. The bill now returns to the U.S. House of Representatives for further consideration. Neera Tanden, President and CEO of the Center for American Progress, released the following statement:
If you want to understand why Americans think Washington is broken and not working for them, one needs to look no further than the monstrosity Senate Republicans just passed. This legislation, which was negotiated behind closed doors and brought forward with no time for members and the public to read it, deals a crushing blow to the working class while lining the pockets of the ultrawealthy. In making the largest cuts to Medicaid and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program ever, defunding Planned Parenthood, and gutting tax credits to produce more energy, this bill will increase the cost of living, including for health care, food, and utilities; kill millions of jobs; leave 17 million Americans without health coverage; explode the national debt; and force states to raise taxes or further reduce benefits Americans rely on to meet their basic needs.
For the well-being of countless Americans, the House must reject the Senate bill—which is somehow even more extreme and fiscally reckless than the radical budget framework that the House previously passed.
