Washington, D.C. — On Sunday, U.S. Senate parliamentarian Elizabeth MacDonough made an initial ruling against the proposal to provide a pathway to citizenship for Dreamers, individuals eligible for Temporary Protected Status (TPS) and Deferred Enforced Departure (DED), and immigrant essential workers, including farmworkers, in budget reconciliation. In response, Philip E. Wolgin, acting vice president of Immigration Policy at the Center for American Progress, issued the following statement:
We are deeply disappointed with the U.S. Senate parliamentarian’s decision but remain confident in our ability to win permanent protections for undocumented immigrants across the country. Senate leaders have already committed to going back to the parliamentarian, and we have long known that there are many ways to win protections in reconciliation. This is not the end of the fight, but rather only one step in the process. Despite last night’s disappointment, today we are back in the fight. We know that putting undocumented immigrants on a pathway to citizenship would have huge benefits for the economy as a whole and for individuals, families, and communities all across the country. It is time for congressional leaders to deliver for our immigrant communities.
