STATEMENT: Failure of Bounds Nomination is Major Warning Sign for Kavanaugh, CAP’s Neera Tanden Says

Washington, D.C. — After Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) withdrew the nomination of Ryan Bounds for a seat on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit, Neera Tanden, president and CEO of the Center for American Progress, issued the following statement:

This is a major warning sign for Judge Brett Kavanaugh and any effort to push right-wing Supreme Court nominees that are far outside of the mainstream. Just like Ryan Bounds, Kavanaugh’s past speeches and opinions raise red flags that he would overturn established precedent and threaten women’s rights, civil rights, and access to health care. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell warned President Trump that Kavanaugh’s paper trail would pose a problem, which is exactly why the people deserve to see every single responsive document and email before the Senate considers his nomination. It is heartening that the Senate can still work across partisan lines to reject judicial nominees that are unacceptable to a majority of the American public.
