Washington, D.C. — The Center for American Progress’s David Balto released the following statement in reaction to the Department of Justice’s announcement that they have filed a precedent-setting monopolization case in Texas:
"Although this market may appear modest, this case establishes an important legal precedent by challenging the exclusionary conduct of a dominant hospital. Marking the first case to be filed by the antitrust agencies against a dominant health care provider in 17 years, it signals a new tough attitude by the Obama DOJ about the market power of health care providers. It is also the first monopolization case of the Obama administration’s antitrust division. By going after exclusionary conduct that led to higher prices, this case shows a tough health care antitrust cop precisely when that is most needed to make health care markets and reform work."
