STATEMENT: Conservatives Refuse to Stand Up to Trump’s Abuse of Power, CAP’s Sam Berger Says

Washington, D.C. — Today, the U.S. House of Representatives failed to override President Donald Trump’s veto of a bipartisan resolution that would have blocked his declaration of a national emergency along the southwest border. In response, Sam Berger, vice president of Democracy and Government Reform at the Center for American Progress, issued the following statement:

Conservative lawmakers today refused to stand up to President Trump’s illegal abuse of power. They are letting him siphon away taxpayer funds meant for our nation’s troops so he can build a needless wall based on a sham emergency. Voters will remember those who stand by silently while the president tries to undermine our democratic values to build himself a campaign backdrop.
