Washington, D.C. — After a federal judge struck down the Trump administration’s plan to add a citizenship question to the 2020 census, Tom Jawetz, vice president of Immigration Policy at the Center for American Progress, issued the following statement:
This ruling is a stunning rebuke of the Trump administration’s effort to push its anti-immigrant agenda at the expense of collecting critical population data. This question would have discouraged millions of Americans from participating in the census, compromised federal funding for critical programs, and undermined representation for traditionally disenfranchised communities. Congress must put an end to this administration’s use of the Census for partisan politics so that it can be used for a fair and accurate count.
