STATEMENT: CAP’s Shannon Baker-Branstetter Praises EPA’s Final Rule on Car and Light Truck Emissions

Washington, D.C. — Today, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced its final rule setting new emissions standards for cars and light trucks for model years 2027 through 2032. These standards are a critical component of the Biden administration’s strategy to reduce U.S. greenhouse gas emissions by 2055 and are projected to cut cumulative carbon dioxide emissions by 7.2 billion metric tons. The standards are also expected to deliver an average of $13 billion in public health benefits per year and save the owner of a model year 2032 vehicle $6,000, compared with a model year 2026 vehicle, through increased efficiency. In response, Shannon Baker-Branstetter, senior director of Domestic Climate and Energy Policy at the Center for American Progress, issued the following statement:

Cleaner cars help protect Americans’ health, safeguard the climate, and power the economy. By setting strong emission standards, standing with workers on the picket line, and investing in an American manufacturing renaissance, the Biden administration is making sure that Americans will always have a choice to buy American-made, union-built, clean cars. The administration has given the auto industry every tool it needs to be a global leader in the clean transportation future.
